Morocco : The lives of Rifain political prisoners in danger!

To date, there are still about twenty Rifain political prisoners in Morocco, notably in the penitentiaries of Fez, Guercif, Selouane and Bouarfa. They were arrested in the spring of 2017 and sentenced in unfair trials for their participation in peaceful popular demonstrations of a social nature in 2016 and 2017. These had broken out following the death of the young fish merchant Mohsen Fikri on 30 October 2016, crushed by a rubbish dumpster while he was trying to save his goods confiscated and thrown into the dumpster by the Moroccan police in Taghzout (El-Hocima), in the Rif region.

Sentences for these detainees range from 5 to 20 years in prison. Yet Morocco recognises in its Constitution the right and freedom to demonstrate peacefully.

The Amazigh World Congress (CMA) considers the detention of Rifans to be totally arbitrary and based on undisclosed political motives. The CMA has therefore always called for their unconditional release and compensation for the harm they have suffered.

Despite the repeated protests of the victims of this grave injustice and those of their families, NGOs for the protection and promotion of human rights, despite our letter to the Moroccan government, the prisoners sentenced to the longest sentences are still being held in detention. They then decided at the beginning of last August to go on hunger strike. Today their state of health has reached a very worrying stage. They simply risk death in prison.

The Moroccan government and its repressive system are solely responsible for this injustice and its consequences.

Therefore, the CMA alerts the relevant international bodies (UN, AU, EU) to this situation, which may end tragically if nothing is done. The CMA urges urgent interventions with the Moroccan government so that it proceeds as soon as possible to the release of the Rifain prisoners. The Moroccan government must respect its international commitments, particularly with regard to respect for human rights.
